This self-described “classically trained garage band” is about to light up the stage at the Billings Symphony’s pops concert

With an unexpected and innovative mix of classical, jazz, and folk music, Grammy-winning Time for Three (TF3) defies conventions. This self-described “classically trained garage band” brings an infectious energy that transcends genres and captivates audiences. With a special appearance by our own BSYO Repertory Orchestra, this captivating concert will lift your spirits and leave you smiling.

GRAMMY and Emmy-winning ensemble, Time For Three (TF3), defies convention and boundaries by showcasing excellence across different genres, including classical music, Americana, and singer-songwriter. Their unique sound captivates audiences, immersing them in a musical experience that merges various eras, styles, and traditions in Western music. TF3, consisting of Charles Yang (violin, vocals), Nicolas “Nick” Kendall (violin, vocals), and Ranaan Meyer (double bass, vocals), combines their instruments and voices in a remarkable sound, establishing a distinct voice of expression that resonates with listeners worldwide.

One of Time For Three’s most remarkable gifts is their ability to sing while they play, something almost unheard of in classical music. Their pure tone and soulful phrasing bring a new kind of intimacy to the stage. With “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King, “Sweet Child O’ Mind” by Guns N’ Roses, and others you are in for a night of impressive and innovative sound.

There will also be a selection of Time For Three’s original songs, including Contact: Codes, composed by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts. His triple concerto, Contact, composed specifically for Time for Three, was born from a serendipitous encounter at Joe’s Pub in New York City, where Puts was captivated by the trio’s ability to seamlessly fuse classical technique with pop, folk, and improvisational styles. This inspired him to craft a concerto that would not only showcase their instrumental prowess but also their vocal talents and charismatic stage presence. He managed to capture their energy perfectly and won a GRAMMY Award for the album “Letters for the Future,” that this piece was featured on.
